Student Resources

What is the role of a student counsellor?

The prime function of a counsellor is to give students advice when needed, so that life at school will be happy and safe. The school counsellor is there for the whole school community including teachers and parents. The role of the counsellor can vary from day to day. However, they deal with issues such as:

  • Bullying
  • Divorce
  • Sleeping disorders
  • Strategies for doing homework
  • Study skills
  • The dangers of substance abuse
  • Careers
  • Diversity and respect for others
  • Healthy diet
  • Problems at home

Counsellors are there to help students cope with life’s challenges. They have special training in helping children to solve problems, make decisions, and stand up for themselves. They take problems seriously and try to help find a solution. They also help students learn as much in class as they can, to be good contributors to the school community and a positive influence on the school environment.
