Creative Arts - Middle Years Programme - Overview

Creative Arts in the Middle School at Utahloy International School Guangzhou is made up of units of studies in Visual Art, Music, Drama and Dance. Students in Grades 7-9 take each of the arts classes throughout the year for two 40 minute periods a week. Students have the opportunity to gain skills and experience in all of the Creative Arts subjects, equipping them with the knowledge and experience to make informed elective choices for their future. In Grade 10 students select one of the three main arts subjects: Drama, Music or Visual Art and follow this course 4 periods a week throughout the year.

The teaching and learning of the arts plays a unique role in the personal development of our students. The Arts in the Middle School programme aim to provide students with an opportunity to develop confidence and self expression. Through a variety of learning experiences, students are encouraged to form and express ideas about their world. The MYP programme aims to provide students with a holistic approach to learning, promoting intercultural awareness, communication, the role of technology in society and culture and an understanding of the Creative Cycle.

Aims

The Arts programme aims to provide students with the opportunity to:

•    experience and develop curiosity, interest and enjoyment in their creativity and that of others
•    explore the processes of the visual arts, drama, and music
•    acquire and develop skills needed in the creation of visual artworks and performance
•    use the language and ideas of the visual arts, drama and music
•    communicate their thoughts and ideas through self expression
•    create visual artwork and performances in music and drama
•    reflect upon, appreciate and evaluate their work and the work of others
•    develop a receptiveness to, and an understanding of, visual and performing arts across time, place and cultures, and perceive the significance of these art forms as an integral part of life
