Mathematics - MYP - Assessment Criteria
Methods of Assessment
Tests will be at the end of each topic, about every 3 or 4 weeks unless otherwise stated by the class teacher. Tests must be completed on the assigned day or within one week of the assigned day. A note from home is required if a students needs to complete a test late due to illness.
One assignment per semester will be given. The form of these assignments will vary. Extensions may be negotiated with the teacher before the due date.
The assessment of class work will be at the discretion of the class teacher and negotiated with the class. It could include homework, bookwork, class activities, in-class assignments, etc.
It is expected that students complete at least 1 hour of homework each week in Year 7, 1.5 hours in Year 8, and 2 hours each week in Year 9 and 10.
Assessment Criteria
Criterion A: Knowledge and Understanding
Students are expected to have a knowledge and understanding of the concepts and skills of the content areas described above.
Criterion B: Investigating Patterns
Students are expected to apply concepts and skills and, through reasoning, develop problem-solving strategies.
Criterion C: Communication in Mathematics
Students are expected to communicate facts, ideas, methods, results and conclusions using appropriate symbols and the language of mathematics.
Criterion D: Reflection in Mathematics
Students are expected to reflect upon methods and processes and to evaluate the significance and reliability of their findings and the findings of others. It is expected that students will consider alternative approaches to solving problems where relevant.
Calculators
Students in year 7-9 are expected to have, and will use scientific calculators throughout the course. Year 10 students will use graphing calculators.
