Fundamental Concepts

The learning associated with Physical Education, Health and Outdoor Education also leads to a close understanding of the fundamental concepts of the MYP:

  • holistic learning
  • intercultural awareness
  • communication.

Holistic Learning

The holistic approach taken by the staff allows the students to:

  • have a reflective approach to learning
  • have an awareness of the contribution physical education makes to society and the quality of life
  • experience and appreciate a wide range of physical activities outside of school through both participation and observation
  • be able to make informed choices that lead to a safe and healthy lifestyle.

Intercultural Awareness

The study of physical activity in society promotes awareness and understanding of the students’ own and other cultures.

The ways the students are involved in intercultural awareness include:

  • the study of a culture and its sporting traditions
  • gender issues in physical activity in different cultures
  • comparative studies of sport and culture
  • history of cultural values
  • culturally determined views of physical activity
  • dance and its traditions.

Communication

MYP Physical Education, Health and Outdoor Education provides opportunities for different forms of communication. Students are encouraged to express verbally and non-verbally their knowledge, skills, thoughts and feelings. Students are also able to communicate as individuals and as members of larger groups. Some elements of communication that are incorporated are:

  • self-reflection and self-evaluation
  • peer teachin
  • teamwork
  • effective use of language in a range of situations
