PE - Course Outline

The Middle Years Physical Education course provides students the opportunity to learn through a developmentally appropriate, comprehensive sequentially planned physical education program, with a range of activities that ensures students have the best opportunity to experience success. Skill mastery is only one goal of a PE program. It is essential that students develop a positive attitude toward lifelong, active, healthy living.  Physical education teachers ensure that the concepts and skills taught are appropriate to students’ ages and stages of development, and to their perceptions, prior knowledge, attitudes, learning styles, and exceptionalities. A variety of instructional approaches are used to ensure that all students are given every opportunity to learn and perform to their full potential.

Year 7 and 8

Focus is on attainment of fundamental motor skills centered around the development of movement skill combinations and movement skill knowledge; the assessment and maintenance of physical fitness to improve health and performance, and the necessary knowledge of physical fitness concepts, principles and strategies; and the application of psychological and sociological concepts, including self-responsibility, positive social interaction, and group dynamics, in the learning and performance of physical activity.

Within the sports covered the focus is on: physical fitness (activities and assessment, concepts, development and maintenance); cooperative activities; mature pattern throwing and catching skills (including softball skills) and lead-up games (hockey and Touch football); volleying skills and lead-up games (volley tennis and/or small-sided volleyball games); racket skills and lead-up games (mini tennis, badminton and table tennis); dribbling skills (hand dribble and foot dribble) and lead-up games (3-on-3 basketball and small-sided soccer games); folk dance; tumbling (gymnastics).

In Year 9 and 10

The main emphasizes is on cooperation, making decisions and working as a team. The focus of this course is the application of movement skills and knowledge (including defensive and offensive strategies) to team physical activities. Students will be empowered to make choices, meet challenges and develop positive behaviors in fitness, wellness and movement activity for a lifetime. Physical emphasis is placed on students analyzing skills for effective movement.

Within the sports covered the focus is on: physical fitness (activities, assessment, concepts, development and maintenance); cooperative activities; movement skills and strategies applied in modified games of: table tennis doubles; soccer, sofcrosse; volleyball; basketball, badminton; softball; hockey; individual and dual activities, rhythms/dance.

At the completion of this course students will be able to:

  • continue to develop effective movement skills.
  • demonstrate an understanding of the fundamentals of movement.
  • maintain an improved health-enhancing level of physical fitness.
  • further develop the skills, knowledge, and interest to independently maintain an active lifestyle.
  • demonstrate an understanding of the various influences on the evolution of a movement-related activity.
