Programme of Inquiry

What is a P.O.I.?

The P.O.I. is a matrix that provides an overview of the Units of Inquiry that will be taught in each grade level. It is a requirement of the IB that the PYP schools have a coherent, articulated P.O.I.. Grades P to P6 implement six Units of Inquiry each year. K1 and K2 implement four. The P.O.I. allows for a balanced inclusion of the subject areas.

What does the P.O.I. contain?

  • Units of Inquiry under the six transdisciplinary themes that run vertically through the matrix (The six transdisciplinary themes are; Who we are, Where we are in place and time, How we express ourselves, How the world works, How we organise ourselves, Sharing the Planet)
  • Grade levels that run horizontally through the matrix
  • Central Ideas, expressing an enduring understanding and linked to the transdisciplinary theme
  • Key and Related Concepts for each Unit of Inquiry
  • Lines of Inquiry which clarify the Central Ideas and define the scope of the inquiry
