University Counselling

The role of the university counsellor is to:

  • guide students’ research into careers and post-secondary school education.
  • help students access materials on the Internet and in hard copy.
  • listen to students’ plans and ideas; give advice about their feasibility and how to realise them.
  • give students advice on subject choices in relation to their career and university plans.
  • assist with university/college applications.
  • be available if parents/guardians wish to discuss their son’s/daughter’s career/study plans.

We begin to work with students in Year 8 and 9, speaking to each year level – along with the relevant subject teachers – at times when they have to choose between different subjects.

As students near the end of Year 10, we conduct information sessions on how to choose careers and courses of study and also meet all students individually to discuss their university and career plans, prior to students making their choice of subjects for the IB.

Throughout Years 11 and 12 we continue to hold compulsory information sessions on researching universities, using university rankings and writing personal statements. We also hold non-compulsory sessions on specific countries and universities and also organise information sessions for students when visitors from overseas universities visit the school. In the IB years we meet all students individually at least once a year and usually much more than that.

Provided they make an appointment at an appropriate time, we are available to meet students – and parents – of any year level to discuss issues to do with university study, careers and subject choices.
