Language is fundamental to learning and permeates the PYP. Our unique Mother Tongue programme from K3 to Year 6 immerses our students in language-rich learning engagements, allowing them to learn through their own mother tongue language, gaining a deeper conceptual understanding. Year level teachers collaborate with Mother Tongue teachers to build language-rich learning engagements throughout each unit of inquiry. Presently, we offer Mother Tongue language learning in:

  • Chinese
  • German
  • Korean
  • French
  • Japanese

UISG has a strong commitment to teaching languages. The maintenance and development of students’ mother tongues is very important to us as it helps students to strengthen their personal identity and is crucial for all further language acquisition.

Middle Years Programme:
In MYP, UISG currently offers Language and Literature lessons for six languages:

  • Chinese
  • Korean
  • Japanese
  • French
  • German
  • Spanish

In Year 7-10, students have the opportunity to study English, their mother tongue and a third language. The following languages are taught as Language Acquisition courses at beginner (Phases 1 and 2) and intermediate level (Phases 3, 4 and 5):

  • Chinese
  • French
  • Japanese
  • Spanish

There are seven lessons a fortnight for Language and Literature and five lessons a fortnight for Language Acquisition. All UISG teaching takes place within the framework of the MYP philosophy. Our language teachers are all native speakers and are trained in teaching their native language as well as in teaching MYP. The lessons take into account the students’ individual language needs and interests. Whenever possible, authentic links are made with other subjects.

Diploma:
IB Diploma students must study two languages to meet the requirements of the Diploma in Group 1 and Group 2. Students may choose to take two Language A subjects or a combination of Language A and Language B. They must take at least one Language A. Languages can be studied at Higher Level (HL), Standard Level (SL) or ab initio (beginner).

Group 1 is for the student’s best language and the course is literature-based; Group 2 is designed for students learning the language up to near native speaker level. Both are suitable for mother tongue speakers, depending on the student’s proficiency. The following languages are available:

  • Chinese A1, B, ab initio
  • French A1, B, ab initio
  • German A1
  • Japanese A1, B
  • Korean A1
  • Spanish A1, B, ab initio

If a student’s mother tongue is not available as a taught subject, students can choose to study it as a ‘Self-taught’ subject, under the supervision of a Language A teacher (i.e. another language).
For students who prefer to start a new language study at Diploma level, we offer ab initio in the following languages for beginners:

  • Chinese
  • French
  • Spanish
  • Italian

At UISG, students are offered seven languages in the Diploma Programme:

  • English
  • French
  • German
  • Japanese
  • Korean
  • Chinese
  • Spanish
