Meet Canadian Graphic Novel Author (Oct 2019)
Secondary students had the opportunity to meet Canadian graphic novel author / artist Sean Karemaker on Thursday! Sean inspired students with the story of his life and career, telling the story of his process and growth as an artist and how his art has taken the form of many divergent media including autobiographical graphic novels, video game design, 30-foot long scroll pieces, fashion and shoe design, and service projects teaching disadvantaged children and brightening a hospital space for terminal patients. Students were involved in a group-creation of a cartoon character, and then challenged in a creative exercise to design their own character. Students also got a chance to experience art in a VR headset, which Sean predicts will be the future of art and comics. Outside experts provide an invaluable opportunity for students to connect their school life to the broader world, and we hope Sean has inspired our students to start work on their own projects!
