Boarding

  1. What are the items provided by the school for each student's room?
    Students will be sharing a room with 2 shower rooms with other students. Your room has air-conditioning and easy access to clean drinking water. The maximum number of students allocated to each room is 4 students. Every room has: 4 beds, bed linen, pillows, blankets, reading desks, chairs, bedside lamps and wardrobes.
  2. What should students not bring to UISZ?
    Please do not bring: furniture, pets, valuables, large sums of money, candles, incense, and illegal or dangerous substances. Please do not bring too much stuff!
  3. What should students bring?
    Clothes for all weather, personal toiletries, towels, pajamas, 2 laundry bags, school bags, socks, swimsuit, sport wear, personal effects and special school supplies
  4. What may students bring?
    Alarm clock, posters or room decorations, your own bed linen, extra blankets if you desire, a lock box to place valuables, a translator, mobile phone, medications, favorite snacks and drinks
  5. What do student usually do after school? Do you provide after-school activities for boarders?
    Boarding staff provide life-skill training classes for all boarders from 5:00pm to 5.40pm. We also have a wide range of other supervised after-school sports activities such as: basketball, volleyball, tennis, badminton, soccer, biking, kayaking, etc. Our Boarding students attend daily supervised homework and tutorial sessions, from 6:30pm-8pm, taught by our international qualified classroom teachers.
  6. Do you have qualified Boarding School staff?
    Boarding School staff members are internationally trained, experienced and qualified. They are committed to your child's wellbeing and provide a safe environment where your child feels supported and valued.
  7. Can my child stay over the weekend?
    Yes, our boarding options include; 5-day boarding, 7-day boarding and flexi-boarding during the weekend for 5 day boarders. You can choose different types of boarding to match your needs. The flexi-boarding request should be submitted 48 hours before your child's stay.
  8. How do you manage students' devices in the Boarding School?
    Students in year 1 to 9 submit their electronic devices to their respective boarding school supervisors before 9.30pm each day before bedtime. Devices are locked away in a designated cabinet until the following morning. Students are required to participate in different trainings and sports activities to avoid excessive use of computers and other electronic devices.
  9. What time do student get up in the morning?
    Wake up call for all our boarding students is at 7am
  10. What time do students go to sleep every night?
    9pm for primary students and 10:30pm for secondary students.
  11. Do you have any other facilities in the Boarding School?
    Dragon house also offers comfortable common rooms on each floor, learning centre, music centre, DP study room and recreational game rooms where students can enjoy their free time, and study. Our state-of-the art Olympic-sized swimming pool, supervised by qualified lifeguards, is open for boarding students after school.


Kindergarten

  1. What do the children need to bring?
    • A change of clothes in case of accidents
    • Drink bottle with drink for morning snack (we have drinking water available)
    • A morning snack - please do not send sweets. The children have a choice of fruit for afternoon snack
    • A hat to wear when we go outside and sun block
    • Swimming clothes and towel on the allocated day (swimming will stop when the water gets too cold)
  2. How is the Kindergarten staffed?
    The Kindergarten teachers are a highly qualified early year's specialists with many years of experience. There are also helpers in the class to ensure that all of the children get individual attention.
  3. What will the children learn in Kindergarten?
    The curriculum being followed is a balance of play and structure based activities that are carefully planned. Research from around the world supports children's learning of a wide range of pre-literacy and pre-maths skills through active exploration and meaningful experiences that take place inside the classroom as well as outside. We want to encourage children to be enthusiastic learners.

    During each school year the children will be involved in 6 IB PYP (International Baccalaureate, Primary Years Programme) Units of Inquiry. Examples of these units are; Who we are, How we organise ourselves, Sharing the planet and How we express ourselves.

    All children work on learning about building relationships, communication, their environment, phonics (letter sounds) and (numbers) and writing their Names. Prep class will begin to learn correct letter formation and to read and write simple sentences.
  4. Are the children assessed in Kindergarten?
    Yes, on a daily basis children are observed whilst they play and as part of questions and discussion during Inquiry based lessons, as well as through their drawings, children are able to communicate their thinking and understanding. Children have writing and reading assessments.

    These observations are then used to help us plan to meet each individual child's needs. Learning is most effective when based on children's interests, so planning is flexible to take this into account.
  5. How are children whose first language is not English catered for?
    At least one teaching assistant is a Chinese speaker.
    English is the language of the school, however we recognise the importance of valuing others' first language. Where applicable we will introduce words from children's home language - for example greetings, colours, numbers. If you can help us with this it would be appreciated. At all times we ensure that the children understand what is being said to them, we make use of sign language, gestures, pictures,videos, etc. to make sure that they are not confused
  6. Is there any correspondence between the kindergarten and home?
    Yes, regular newsletters and a communication book is used to inform you of what your child has been learning as well as other comments or incidents or spontaneous happenings throughout their day. Please use this book to ask your questions about what your child is doing/learning or if you need to tell us anything about your child.

    You are welcome to call any time and make an appointment to see your child's teacher. There are opportunities to come and meet the staff and see your child's work at various times during the year.


Primary

  1. What do the children need to bring? What does school provide for them?
    School bags with basic stationery, no specific requirement must be brought. All learning resources will be provided by the school.
  2. How many year levels and classes do you have?
    We have Year 1 - Year 6 in Primary, with only one class in each year level.
  3. How many students are in each class? What is the maximum class size?
    Students' numbers vary in each year level. The maximum is 22 in each class.
  4. What will you do for new students to help them have an easy transition?
    We have a well developed induction system: Peers, School Counsellor and the Student Welfare System will help ease the student into their new school life.
  5. Do they need to wear school uniform?
    Yes, Primary students should wear school uniform every day.
  6. What curriculum do you offer?
    We offer IB Primary Years Programme (PYP)
  7. Do you have Chinese class? Which text book do you use?
    Yes, there are 4 periods of Chinese classes each week. We do not use one prescribed text book. Teachers use a variety of resources and different kinds of text books, and a wide range of online resources for our students to promote real-life learning and access to diverse points of view.
  8. Do students need to take exams in Primary? Are the children assessed in Primary?
    No. Students do not take exams, but are assessed following the PYP criteria. Student receives a report at the end of each semester.
  9. How are children whose first language is not English catered for?
    At least one teaching assistant is a Chinese speaker in Y1 and Y2 class. Y3-6 will have teaching assistant rotations. Our ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) programme helps students to develop their English Skills.
  10. Is there any correspondence between the primary school and home? If parents can not speak English, can someone be the translator?
    Yes, regular newsletters and a communication book are used to inform you of what your child has been learning as well as other comments or incidents or spontaneous happenings throughout their day. Please use this book to ask your questions about what your child is doing/learning or if you need to tell us anything about your child. You are welcome to call any time and make an appointment to see your child's teacher. There are opportunities to come and meet the staff and see your child's work at various times during the year. We do have translation help for parents who are not native English speakers.

  7. What universities can my son/daughter attend after graduating from UISZ?
    IB is well recognized. Students can use IB results to apply for the best universities all around the world.
  8. What is China New Horizons?
    Our Visiting school programme,'China New Horizons', uses UISZ as a home base. Students take part in programs designed to open minds and maximize the potential of each individual. Exploring Chinese culture, language and history, the programme takes advantage of the unique location and opportunities offered in the South of China.The beautiful botanical garden setting offers an environment in which to explore ecology and nature. Through UISZ connection with CNH, with an environmental campus in Pak Lap, Hong Kong, students also venture to some of Hong Kong's most pristine beaches and national parks. Activities are based on leadership, teamwork, innovation and creativity.


Secondary

  1. What do students need to bring? What does school provide for them?
    Students should bring their own device. An Admission Package is given to new students which includes a student diary, notebooks, pens and pencils to start classes. Students are expected to appropriately equip themselves for lessons with necessary writing and organisation supplies.
  2. How many year levels and classes do you have?
    We have Year 7 - Year 12 in Secondary, with only one class in each year level.
  3. How many students are in each class? What is the maximum class size?
    Student numbers vary in each year level. The maximum is 24 in each class.
  4. What do you do for new students to help them have an easy transition?
    A student buddy, peers, School Counsellor and the Student Welfare System will help ease the student into their new school life. Our new student orientation programme, as well as regular activities in our Pastoral Programme, ensure a student's transition into school life is monitored and supported according to individual needs.
  5. What curriculum do you offer ?
    We offer IB Middle Years Programme(MYP) and Diploma Programme(DP)
  6. Which text book do you use?
    We do not use one prescribed text book. Teachers use a wide variety of resources and different kinds of books. This includes a wide range of online and electronic resources made available for our students in order to promote real-life learning and access to diverse points of view.
  7. Do students need to take exams in Secondary? How are they being assessed?
    Usually at the end of each semester students have to sit examinations, which are called Summative Assessments, but they are constantly assessed throughout the year according to the IB guidelines. Every unit of work is assessed. Summative Assessments may take a variety of forms, of which examination-style assessment is one kind. Examination-style assessments are commonplace in IB Diploma subjects. Students need to develop their examination skills in preparation for final examinations during May of Year 12. Each semester students and parents are provided with one Interim Report and one thorough End of Semester Report.
  8. Do you help students to apply for University?

  9. Is there any correspondence between the Secondary school and home? If parents can not speak English, can someone help with translation?
    Yes, regular newsletters, a student diary, our ManageBac system, which has 'live' viewing capabilities, and event communications are used to inform you of what your child has been learning, as well as any upcoming commitments pertinent to your child. You are welcome to call any time and make an appointment to see your child's teacher. There are opportunities to come and meet the staff and see your child's work at various times during the year. Teachers may also email you about subject-related issues for your child. A 'Week Ahead' update is regularly communicated via WeChat and our website. We do have translation offered to parents who are not native English speakers.

Admission

  1. How can I arrange a visit to your school?

  5. How many students do you have and what are the nationalities?
    Currently we have about 210 students from 27 different nationalities.
  6. How many students are in each class?
    Students' numbers vary in each class. The maximum is 16 in K1, 20 in K2-P,22 in primary and 24 in secondary.
  7. What is your Curriculum?
    UISZ offers IB curriculum for our students. The Primary Years Programme(PYP), Middle Years Programme(PYP) and the Diploma(DP)
  8. What time does school start and end?
    School starts at 8:30am and ends at 3:35pm
  9. How many teachers do you have and where are they from?
    We have around 39 foreign teachers and 6 Chinese teachers. They are from all around the world: US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, France, Ireland, Holland, South Africa, Brazil, etc.
  10. What is the quality of teaching at UISZ?
    We attend the top Job Fairs all around the world to get the best teachers to maintain the high teaching quality for our students. They are fully qualified and trained IB teachers.
  11. Do you have boarding facilities?
    Yes, UISZ is not only an international school but also a boarding school. The boarding house (Dragon House) offers 7-day boarding, 5-day boarding and flexi-boarding. Students in Y2 (7 years old) and above can stay in boarding house. Y1 students (6 years old) can stay in boarding house after an interview with the Head of Boarding. We do not provide boarding for Kindergarten students.
  12. Do students need to wear school uniform?
    Yes, students should wear school uniform every school day.
  13. Do you provide school buses for students?
    Yes. We provide school buses for day and boarding students
  14. Do you provide meals for students?
    Yes. We provide meals for students. It is included in school fees, and students do not need to pay extra.
  15. Does my child need to bring his/her device to school? If so, how do you manage it?
    In UISZ, Y5 and above should bring their own device to school (BYOD). Parents and students must sign the ICT User Agreement in order to guide students to learn how to use their device properly.
  16. Do you have Scholarship Testing?
    Yes, we have Y5-11 Scholarship Testing during our school Open Day in April every year (limited number of places.)
  17. Do you have an ESOL programme?
    Yes, we do have the ESOL programme. After the Oxford Online English Testing, students will be placed into one of the 6 different English phases to develop English Skills. It enables students to integrate into the full mainstream programme from the very beginning. To make sure ELL (English Language Learner) do not fall behind in their studies, UISZ has put together a support scheme that includes differentiated instruction in Arts, Maths, PHE and Design and a Structured English Immersion (SEI) model in Sciences and Humanities.
  18. What kind of language programme do you have?
    We recognize the importance of students being fluent in their Mother tongue, as well as being multi-lingual. Our Language Programme recognizes the importance of developing students' first language, while improving their language skills through the study of additional languages. Students enrolled in MYP English Literature and Language Acquisition (Phase4 and above) can access a third language course.
  19. Do you have CCA (Co-Curricular Activities)?
    In the last period on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, student will have CCA. Usually there are 6 rotations in the whole year. In each rotation, student can choose different clubs.
  20. Do you provide SEN (Special Educational Needs) for students?
    The school does not have the resources to administer a programme for children with severe learning disabilities (e.g. severe speech disability, severe autism, severe physical disability, etc.) Parents/guardians of children who are admitted to UISZ with special needs must present a recent psycho-educational assessment that has been conducted by a licensed school psychologist within the last two years. These results will determine the appropriateness of the child's enrolment in the school.
  21. Does school help students to apply for a Student Visa?
    No, UISZ is not authorized to issue student visas for students. It is the parents' responsibility to obtain the appropriate visa.
